Winnie headed home so sad and depressed that the voyage barely registered. She walked the road at night and slept and ate sparingly during the day not knowing what or who she was hiding from. Fritz had made an enemy of a man by the name of Kurt Oster but she had no idea how that applied to her, yet she hid out of caution. Her home was with Emma if she’d be welcomed back. She waited in the uncultivated foliage fifty yards from Jack’s house with a view of the back door and not seeing Emma once in two days of watching she became alarmed and sought Mooge for answers. They were childhood friends going back to swimming in the river and drying off on the hot boulders but he always thought he was too good for her and that hurt her young and tender impressionable heart at the time. She knew he’d help her though; he was a good guy all things considered.

“Winnie, come in!” Mooge greeted her so warmly that she burst into tears. Mooge was a confirmed bachelor, he had live in girl friends over the years but by no means was he accustomed to weeping women. He helped her to a couch and she soon recovered then apologized for her behavior, became embarrassed and started crying all over again. She had no idea what to expect from Mooge and when he seemed genuinely glad to see her she fell apart.

Recovered for a second time she started in, “I went by Jack’s and didn’t see Emma, is she OK?”

“She’s OK.” Not knowing how much Winnie knew of the situation, it was pretty common knowledge that she had had a crush on Jack at least at one time, he didn’t want to push her over the edge so he started off slowly. “Jack got married.” She nodded like someone would when they understood. “His wife was going to have a baby so Emma stayed with her. They went to England months ago.” She did tear up and Mooge felt bad for her, she looked so vulnerable, something he had never seen in her before, the vibrant, fun loving Winnie looked worn.

“I want you to stay here for as long as you need to, go get cleaned up, you’ll find something to wear, just look around. I was about to have lunch so join me when you’re ready.” He rushed all of this as if giving an order just so she couldn’t say no.

Mooge thought she looked great when she reappeared. He had always been attracted to her but she was so wild he didn’t think anyone could tame her. He wondered now if someone had.

Angus and Foster rode out to the mine going around the back way and left the horses tethered and grazing several hundred yards from it. Foster, being an experienced hunter, led the way stealthily through the jungle on a see but not seen mission of gathering information to cable back to Jack. A barracks had been built since their last visit, a clue they were there for the long haul.
